The Mohali police claim to have busted a gang of cheats with the arrest of three persons, including a woman, and the recovery of Rs 42 lakh in fake notes of Rs 2,000 denomination.

Those arrested are Abhinav Verma, a BTech and resident of Dhakoli in Zirakpur, his cousin Vishakha Verma from Kapurthala, who is pursuing MBA from Manipur, and Suman Nagpal, a Ludhiana-based property dealer. Two members of the gang are still at large, said the police.

Besides the fake currency, the police have recovered an Audi car, worth around Rs 70 lakh, having a red beacon atop.

Giving details, Mohali Superintendent of Police Parminder Singh Bhandal said Abhinav Verma and his cousin Vishakha were the masterminds as both were well qualified. “They had installed the paraphernalia at some place to print fake notes of Rs 2,000 as the people were not much aware about the authenticity of the new currency notes,” said the SP.

“The recovered notes are of fine quality and look exactly like the new notes of Rs 2,000,” he said.

The accused used to install a red beacon atop the Audi car to avoid being checked by the police. The trio was nabbed with the fake currency near Bakarpur village. “They were going in the car to deliver the amount to somebody,” said the SP.

The accused recently started giving shape to their nefarious activities after the introduction of the new currency notes, said the police.

“As part of their modus operandi, the Ludhaina-based property dealer, Suman, used to allure persons interesting in exchanging old currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 by charging 30 per cent of the total amount. They used to give them fake currency notes after deducting their 30 per cent commission,” said the SP.

The police have registered a case under Sections 420, 489 A, B, C and D and 120 B at the Sohana police station.

The accused were produced before a local court, which remanded them in one-day police custody.
