Chandigarh, October 12

In a bid to decongest traffic, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation today started work on removing the Sector 33-34 and Sector 32-33 rotaries.

The UT engineering wing has already installed traffic lights at these two rotaries.

MC Chief Engineer NP Sharma said first they would remove the Sector 33-34 roundabout and thereafter the Sector 32-33 roundabout. The work was started after getting approval from the UT Chief Architect’s office. The proposal to remove these two rotaries was initially forwarded by the UT Police Department, he said.

During the peak hours, these two roundabouts witness a huge rush.

The UT traffic police had forwarded the proposal to the UT Administration after receiving a complaint from city-based advocate HC Arora.

A senior official of the UT Administration said before taking the decision to remove these roundabouts, they had carried out a study of the area and concluded that the roundabouts needed to be replaced by traffic lights to end the traffic chaos.

Thereafter, approval for removing these roundabouts was given by former UT Adviser Vijay Kumar Dev at a road safety council meeting last year.

Besides, the UT Administration is installing traffic lights at various small rotaries in the city to manage traffic rush during the peak hours.
