A high drama was witnessed when the family of a 12-year-old boy, who was crushed to death by a truck on Friday, refused to take the body and blocked the NH-21 for nearly an hour on Saturday morning, demanding the arrest of the accused truck driver. They relented only after the police claimed that they had arrested the accused.

Shivam, a resident of Valmiki Colony, Phase VI, was playing outside the gate of the truck union office on Friday when a truck came out of the gate and crushed him.

The victim’s family was called to the Civil Hospital at Phase VI on Saturday morning to take the body for performing the last rites as autopsy had been conducted. However, they refused to do so till the accused driver was arrested and squatted on the road outside the hospital.

As the deceased’s kin refused to budge, a senior police official reached the spot and told them that the accused truck driver had been arrested. Following this, the family lifted the dharna and took the body.

The police said they had arrested Rampal, a resident of Himachal Pradesh, in the case. —TNS
