Two killed in hit-&-run cases

CHANDIGARH: Two hit-and-run cases have been reported from the city in which two pedestrians, including a 70-year-old woman, lost their lives.

Two hit-and-run cases have been reported from the city in which two pedestrians, including a 70-year-old woman, lost their lives.

According to the police, the woman, Kanta, a resident of Kendriya Vihar, Sector 48, was found lying on the road separating Sectors 48 and 49 last night.

People informed the police after which the woman was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, where doctors declared her brought dead.

The police said during preliminary investigation, it was found that the victim was hit by an unknown vehicle, which sped away after the incident.

A police official said, “The victim’s daughter stays in Sector 48 and her son stays in a nearby sector. She was going to her son’s house when a car hit her while crossing the road.” The autopsy was conducted and the body handed over to her family.  A case has been registered against the unknown driver at the Sector 49 police station.  In another accident, a pedestrian, identified Harinder Singh, a resident of Sector 41, was killed after an unidentified vehicle hit him and sped away.  The incident took place on the road on the rear side of the Dev Samaj College for Women in Sector 45.  The injured was rushed to the PGI where he succumbed to his injuries.  A case against the unknown driver has been registered at the Sector 34 police station. 

During the past five years, road accidents in the city have claimed 664 lives of whom 213 were pedestrians, comprising 32.07 per cent of the total deaths.
