CHANDIGARH: An Uber cab driver has been arrested for allegedly harassing a girl, who had once booked the cab through the company.

Chandigarh, June 15

An Uber cab driver has been arrested for allegedly harassing a girl, who had once booked the cab through the company. The accused started sending messages to the victim posing as a girl. The accused was thrashed by the victim’s family and handed over to the police.

Sources said the victim, a 20-year-old college student and resident of Dadu Majra, had booked the cab in May for some destination. Since the rider’s number is sent to the cab driver, he saved the victim’s mobile number on his phone.

The victim’s family alleged that the accused driver, Jasmer Singh, a resident of Mohali district, started sending messages to her on WhatsApp posing as a girl, named Jyoti.

The victim, unaware of the fact that the person sending her messages was a man, started chatting with the person. The accused kept chatting with the girl for about a month.

“The accused used to even download the girl’s WhatsApp display picture (DP) and send it back to her with comments,” the sources said.

The victim later came to know that the person was not a girl after which she narrated the story to her family. The victim’s family asked her to call the accused near Dadu Majra, where he was thrashed. The entire incident was also recorded on the mobile phone. The police were informed and the cab driver handed over to them. The accused was arrested and a case registered against him under Sections 419 (punishment for cheating by personation) and 354-D (stalking) at the Maloya police station. — TNS
