An undertrial lodged in the Burail jail fled from the jail premises today while he and 56 other undertrials were being taken to the District Courts, Sector 43, for a hearing. He was re-arrested by the UT police within a few hours of his escape.

The undertrial, Anil Kumar, alias Nana, a resident of Burail, who was declared a proclaimed offender, was arrested on Sunday by the PO cell. Sources said while being taken to the District Courts this morning along with the others, he managed to give the police the slip. “He did not sit on the bus and managed to go towards the hall where visitors meet inmates,” said the sources.

The bus of the Chandigarh Police brought the undertrials to the court where the staff found that there were 57 warrants and only 56 inmates. The jail staff checked the CCTV footage and found that one of the undertrials had escaped while boarding the bus.

Inspector Ranjodh Singh, SHO, Sector 49 police station, said after getting information, police teams were constituted and the undertrial was arrested from Sector 52. A case under Section 224 (resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension) of the IPC has been registered against the undertrial.

The sources said the accused had a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder registered against him at Sector 34 in 2012.
