The enforcement branch of the Estate Office has sealed an industrial unit in the Industrial Area, Phase II, for running without taking permission from the Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC).
Sources said the CPCC had given a list of erring industrial units to the enforcement branch for sealing these after they failed to take the required permission under environment rules.
The sources said Unit No. 20 in the Industrial Area, Phase II, was sealed on the directions of the CPCC. The unit was using a chemical, causing pollution.
The sources said the consent of the CPCC was required under Sections 25 and 26 of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974; under Section 21 of the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981, and under Rule 5 of the Hazardous Waste (Management, Handling and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2008, of the Environmental (Protection) Act, 1986, before starting production in the units. The CPCC had earlier served notices on over 125 industrial units, running without consent, and had asked the owners to close the units immediately and seek permission after fulfilling the criteria.
