Chandigarh, June 24
A USA-based singer Priya Kaur presented varied genres of Punjabi songs in a special musical programme “Surmayi Shaam” organised by Punjab Sangeet Natak Akdemi (PSNA) at Randhawa Auditorium here on Sunday.
Introducing the artiste the PSNA secretary, Preetam Rupal, said Priya Kaur was an alumnus of the Department of Music, Panjab University, Chandigah. Priya secured her MPhil degree in classical music before migrating to USA in 2000, she added. “She remains rooted to the musical traditions of Punjab,” she said.
Priay opened up with Sufiana Kalams of mystics like Chhap Tilak Sab Chheeni, Mann Kunto Maula Rubais and more Sufi utterances of mystics Hazrat Amir Khusro, Bulleh Shah and others.
She presented literary songs of contemporary poets, including her own compositions. Her recorded song Sunne sunne rahan bich was well received by Shiromani poet Surjit Patar, Ravinder Sehrawat and the audience.
GS Lovely and group provided musical accompaniment to her. Chief guest, Dr Surjit Patar, honoured all artistes present on the occasion. — OC
