Chandigarh, February 23

The UT police, who had thrice sought extension of the police remand of Harmehtab Singh, alias Farid, co-accused in the Akansh murder case, in a surprise move, today presented him in a local court even before his police remand ended, a day after the court reminded the police to follow guidelines.

The police had yesterday sought extension of Farid’s remand by three days from the court. However, the court had extended the remand by two days. His remand was to end on Friday, but the police presented him in the court today to send him to judicial custody. The court of Civil Judge Nisha sent him to 14-day remand.

Poonam Dilawari, SHO of the Sector 3 police station, told Chandigarh Tribune that the accused was changing his statements time and again and thus they had sent him to judicial custody. However, the police appeared to be wary of the directions issued by the court yesterday.

Duty Magistrate Karanvir Singh Maju had yesterday asked the police that in case Farid was taken to Amristar, they would have to get his medical examination conducted and a DDR registered at the police station concerned in Amritsar.

Akansh Sen (28), nephew of Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, was run over by a BMW car in Sector 9 on February 9.

According to the police, the accused, Balraj Singh Randhawa, a resident of Sector 77, Sohana, Mohali, was allegedly driving the BMW car while Farid, a resident of Radewala Farm, Landran, Mohali, was sitting next to him when the incident took place.
