Veer claims silver, bronze for Akashdeep

CHANDIGARH:Haryana’s Veer Khatkar clocked 1:59.



Chandigarh, June 28

Haryana’s Veer Khatkar clocked 1:59.39s to clinch a silver medal in the boys’ 200m freestyle competition on the fifth day of the 35th Sub-Junior and 45th Junior National Aquatic Championships in Pune on Thursday.   

A national record holder in the boys’ 100m and 50m freestyle events, Khatkar finished 0.38s behind gold medallist Shoan Ganguly. 

Akashdeep Singh of Punjab recorded a timing of 2:01.59s to return with a bronze medal.  

Earlier, the girls’ 200 m breaststroke record in group II category was broken twice. Kareena Shankta of SFI clocked 2:48.02s in the heats to break the existing record by three seconds.

Vedika Amin of SFI swum a wonderful last 50m to edge past Kareena at the home stretch to set a new national record and win gold; clocking 2:43.97s. 

Kareena won silver with a timing of 2:44.29s, while Rachana S Rao of Karnataka (2:48.06) won bronze.  — TNS
