Chandigarh: A 19-year-old vehicle thief has been arrested by the Chandigarh Police, leading to the recovery of seven two-wheelers and a car.



Chandigarh: A 19-year-old vehicle thief has been arrested by the Chandigarh Police, leading to the recovery of seven two-wheelers and a car. The accused has been identified as Vikas, who used to steal the two-wheelers for joyrides. He was arrested by a team of the Sector 24 police post. Ram Gopal, DSP (Central), said on a tip-off, a naka was laid on the road separating Sectors 11 and 12 and the accused arrested while riding a stolen vehicle. During questioning, the accused confessed to having stolen more two-wheelers. On the disclosure made by the accused, the police recovered a car, four motorcycles and three scooters. “With the recovery, five theft cases — three registered at the Sarangpur police station and two at the Sector 11 police station — have been solved,” the DSP said. Recharge coupons stolen

Chandigarh: Thieves decamped with recharge coupons worth around Rs 95,000 and 15 kg of dry fruits from a shop in Sector 15. The incident took place on the night intervening July 14 and July 15. Om Parkash Mahajan, a resident of Sector 38, reported that unknown persons entered his shop after breaking the locks and decamped with the recharge coupons and dry fruits. TNS

Fire in Shatabdi turbo charger

Chandigarh: Panic gripped passengers travelling on the Delhi-bound Shatabdi when the turbo charger installed in the rear engine of the train caught fire. The incident took place around 6.15 pm when the train reached near the Chandimandir area in Panchkula. Suddenly, smoke was seen coming out of the rear end of the train. In no time, officials spotted flames and the train was stopped. Some passengers panicked on seeing the flames and jumped from the train when it came to a halt near Chandimandir. The fire was soon doused, but it took nearly an hour for the train to chug off again. Divisional Railway Officer Dinesh Kumar said, “The incident occurred due to overheating of the turbo charger. However, timely action was taken and the snag rectified. The train was allowed to run again after carrying out a detailed inspection.” TNS

CCTVs to check traffic offenders             

Mohali: The police have started installing CCTV cameras at various traffic light points in the town to keep a check on traffic offenders and criminal activity. SSP Kuldeep Singh Chahal said on Friday there was a plan to have 20 such cameras at strategic points. Seven of these had already been installed. Such cameras are  planned to be installed at the traffic light points on the Airport road, Landran Chowk and other areas. According to reports, the police also plan to have CCTV cameras outside police stations.  In 2015, the Municipal Corporation also wanted that CCTV cameras should be installed in Mohali, but the plan could not make any headway. oc
