Victim’s kin, leaders hold protest, seek compensation

NABHA:Led by various political leaders, relatives and friends of 24-year-old youth Nishan Singh, who lost his life after the branch of a tree fell on him on Friday morning, held a protest at the busy Bouran chowk on the Nabha-Malerkotla state highway on Saturday afternoon demanding compensation for victim’s family.

Led by various political leaders, relatives and friends of 24-year-old youth Nishan Singh, who lost his life after the branch of a tree fell on him on Friday morning, held a protest at the busy Bouran chowk on the Nabha-Malerkotla state highway on Saturday afternoon demanding compensation for victim’s family.

The protesters were led by Raj Singh Todarwal, president, Jabar Julam Virodhi Front, Kashmir Singh Gayaiya of the CPI, Dev Mann of the AAP and Kabir Dass of the Shiromani Akali Dal. The 

protesters also submitted a memorandum to 

the state government, which was received by tehsildar Sukhjinder Singh Tiwana.

The protesters demanded that the government should provide free treatment to the injured girl, Gagandeep Kaur, who was riding pillion, and is presently under treatment at the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh. They also demanded that the government should provide a government job to one of the members of the poor family.

Raj Singh Todarwal also demanded that a case should be registered against the Forest Department as it had failed to cut the trees posing danger to the people. He said despite several letters to the department, nothing had been done. Even Cabinet Minister Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, who was elected by the local people, had failed to take any initiative in this regard. They demanded that action should be taken against the official concerned of the department who had failed to take action on their applications.

The family members also demanded that a case should be registered in this regard. Otherwise, they would not cremate the body of the deceased.

However, Sukhraj Singh, Station House Officer (SHO) of the Kotwali Police Station, told the protesters that a case under Section 304A had already been registered in the regard on Friday. He said anyone found negligent in the case would be booked as per the law.
