Chandigarh, March 22

The UT traffic police have installed two speed radar cameras on Jan Marg on a trial basis, which will record images of overspeeding cars.

The radar will capture the speed of the vehicle while the camera will click the picture of the speeding vehicle after which a challan will be sent at the vehicle owner’s address.

DSP (Traffic) Yashpal Sharma said two speed radar cameras had been installed on Jan Marg on a trial basis. “These are night vision cameras, which will also be helpful in checking overspeeding at night when the violation is rampant,” the DSP said.

He said once the image of an overspeeding vehicle was captured, a challan through a traffic violation information slip (TVIS) would be sent on the vehicle owner’s address. “The photograph of the vehicle will serve as an evidence in the court,” he said.

Police officials said once the trial was successful, speed radar cameras would be installed in various parts of the city.

The police believe the speed radar cameras would act as a deterrent for overspeeding motorists.

The DSP said the radars would also help reduce road accidents, especially at night.

At present, challans for overspeeding are issued at nakas. Traffic cops sit on the roadside with a speed radar around 200 metres before the spot where the naka is laid. The traffic cops with the speed radar then wireless the information about an overspeeding vehicle to the cops at the naka, who stop the vehicle and issue a challan. Those who are caught for the offence also lose their driving licence for three months.

Large screen displays speed

A large screen has also been installed with the speed radar cameras that displays the speed at which a motorist crossing from there is driving. A motorist can see the speed at which he is driving.

In the offing

Police officials said once the trial was successful, speed radar cameras would be installed in various parts of the city.
