Weapons recovered from students’ vehicles at PU

Two sickles, an axe and 45 baseball and cricket bats were recovered by the Panjab University security staff during checking at gates from vehicles of students who came to attend the events of two student parties on the campus today.

Over 200 vehicles were not allowed to enter the campus by the security staff as they belonged to outsiders, who had come on a call of the student parties to participate in the events.

Security was specially deployed at three entry points today as the two student parties were to make announcements regarding their panels for the Panjab University Campus Student Council Elections.

PU chief security officer Jatinder Grover said as they were aware that the parties were going to make their announcements at the Student Centre, the security staff were instructed to check all vehicles entering the campus. He said whenever any party would make any announcements regarding the elections, special checking would be conducted to keep a check on outsiders.

This morning, traffic jams were witnessed outside all three gates due to the checking by the security staff. Visitors to the PGI also faced inconvenience due to the traffic chaos.

Ignoring the instructions given by the Chandigarh Police to all student parties during a special meeting on Monday, party workers were seen roaming on the campus with stickers of their respective parties on their vehicles. The directions for not allowing outsiders for campaigning during the council elections were also violated today by the parties which announced their panels for the elections.

Permission not sought

The Haryana Students Association, which announced its merger with the YUWA today, did not seek permission from the DSW office for holding the event.
