In a hit-and-run case, a woman riding pillion on a scooter died while three others, including a woman and her two children who were also riding pillion on another motorcycle, were injured when a car hit both two-wheelers at the Airport light point today.
According to the police, Rakesh Rai, a resident of Behlana, complained that he, along with his wife, was on his way to Ram Darbar on a scooter when a speeding car, bearing a registration number of Panchkula, hit the scooter following which he and his wife Rinku Rai fell on the road. Rinku suffered serious injuries.
The car driver went on to hit a motorcycle being driven by Vijay. His wife Manita and their sons Harish (4) and Tanmaya (6), who were riding pillion, suffered injuries.
After hitting both two-wheelers, the car driver drove off. Passersby informed the police, following which a PCR vehicle rushed all injured to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, where the doctors declared Rinku dead on arrival.
A case against an unknown driver under sections 279 (rash driving) and 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at the Sector 31 police station.
The police said the complainant had provided them with the registration number of the car and efforts were being made to trace the driver.
