CHANDIGARH:A 27-year-old woman received burn injuries after two motorcycle-borne unidentified miscreants spilled kerosene on her on Tuesday night and set her on fire at Mani Majra.

A 27-year-old woman received burn injuries after two motorcycle-borne unidentified miscreants spilled kerosene on her on Tuesday night and set her on fire at Mani Majra.

The victim, who got married on September 10, suffered 45 per cent burn injuries and was admitted to the PGI. The police have booked the victim’s husband, his father and a cousin along with others in a case of attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy.

The victim, Amrita, had got married to Gurvinder, who is a taxi driver. 

The victim said she had an affair with Gurvinder for the past one and a half years, but he refused to marry her. “I made a police complaint against him following which he agreed to get married against the wishes of his family and finally we got married on September 10,” the victim said. The victim alleged that her husband started living at her house after the marriage and started harassing her. “A few days after the marriage, he asked for a divorce,” the victim said. 

Narrating the incident, the victim said she was returning from a hospital along with her mother on a scooter when she noticed that a flat tyre. “We got down from the scooter and started walking. My mother was ahead of me when I saw a motorcycle pass by us. It came back after taking a U-turn; I thought they returned to help us,” said the victim. 

She said the accused came close to her and spilled kerosene on her while sitting on the motorcycle and set her on fire.

The victim could not see the faces of the accused as one of them was wearing a helmet while the other one had his face covered with a handkerchief. 

In her statement to the police, the victim blamed her husband and his family for the attack. 

The police have registered a case under Sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC against the victim’s husband, Kulvinder, her father-in-law Kashmir Singh, Kulvinder’s cousin Rinku and others at the Mani Majra police station.  

The police said raids were being conducted to nab the accused. 

SHO offers money for treatment 

The victim did not have money to get treatment. The Mani Majra SHO, Inspector Harminderjit Singh, helped the victim by giving Rs 5,000 for her treatment. 

‘I kept lying on the road’

“Within a matter of seconds, the miscreants set me on fire. I kept lying on the road with burn injuries till the police vehicle arrived and rushed me to the hospital,” said thevictim.
