Chandigarh, April 5

Several years after Nek Chand expressed unhappiness over the apathy of the UT Administration towards the development of the world famous Rock Garden, the garden seems to have finally caught the fancy of officers here. The UT Administration has approved a project for illumination of the Rock Garden, that shuts at 5 pm every day, with the aim of extending the visiting hours to 10 pm.

In addition, a direct exit gate from Phase 3 of the Rock Garden will also be created. UT Health Secretary Anurag Aggarwal said the illumination project would cost Rs 5 crore approximately.

“The Administration has assured us that the work will start in 10 to 15 days and is expected to be completed in six months. While allowing night entry, the presence of the police will also have to be ensured for the safety of visitors to the Rock Garden,” said Anuj Saini, Nek Chand’s son.

The number of visitors was expected to double from the 5,000 per day now to 10,000 after the extended hours, he said. LEDs will be used for lighting up the Rock Garden. Following the completion of this project, Phase 4 of the garden will be developed.
