The district police have booked a 25-year-old youth for allegedly attempting to rape a student of an engineering college here today. The accused has been identified as Iqbal Singh, a juice vendor of nearby Kot Balla village.
The girl was so much terrified after the incident that she took more than a fortnight to muster courage to lodge a complaint with the police and that too after the motivation by the institute management.
According to the police, the victim was doing internship at Guru Gobind Singh Super Thermal Plant for the past one month. On June 29, it was drizzling when the girl left the plant to go to her institute and she took lift from Iqbal Singh who was on his scooter to go to the main road. Ikbal first stopped at a petrol station to get fuel. After this, instead of going to the main road, he turned towards a deserted place. After reaching there, he tried to rape the girl. When the girl raised alarm, some passers-by rushed towards the spot. Following this, the accused fled the spot.
The police said after scrutinising the CCTV footage retrieved from cameras installed at the petrol pump, the accused has been identified and would be arrested soon.
