Chandigarh, September 2

The Chandigarh Police today ordered an inquiry to verify the authenticity of the letter purportedly written by Zulfiqar Khan, director of Theatre Age, an NGO, to the four complainants, urging them to help him come out of jail by giving statements in his favour in the sodomy case.

UT IG (Prisons) AS Cheema has marked an inquiry on the basis of a report published in Chandigarh Tribune today under the headline, “Zulfiqar Khan writes to children from Burail Jail!”.

Sources said the letter was likely to increase the trouble for Zulfiqar, who had filed a bail application in the court, as one of the conditions for getting bail was that the accused would not pressure the complainants in any way.

Cheema said he had marked an inquiry and had instructed the Burial Jail superintendent to verify the authenticity of the letter. He said any such communication sent to the complainants was against law and would affect the outcome of his bail application. UT DSP (Central) Satish Kumar said he had not received a copy of the letter from the Chandigarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights. He said after receiving the letter, action would be taken and  authenticity of the sender would be verified

Complainant’s request to IG

One of the complainants on Wednesday urged the UT IG that he had given the statement under Section 164 of the CrPC under pressure from Zulfiqar’s close relative and wanted to change it.
