16 mobiles seized in surprise check

AMRITSAR: Alarmed over the recent jail break at Gurdaspur Central Jail, the authorities tightened security and launched a search operation on the premises of Amritsar Central Jail.

Alarmed over the recent jail break at Gurdaspur Central Jail, the authorities tightened security and launched a search operation on the premises of Amritsar Central Jail.

Jail officials confiscated 16 mobile phones, including two from jail inmates, during the search. According to information, police have booked Shamsher Singh of Umra Khan village in Verowal and Kuldip Singh of Padhal village in Patti. The jail staff recovered one cell phone each from the two.

The Gate Hakima police have booked the two under Sections 42 and 52-A of the Prisoners Act.

Similarly, as many as 14 mobile phones were found unclaimed from the jail premises. The instances of seizure of mobile phones from the jail premises continue unabated. During past six months, the jail staff recovered over 200 mobile phones from inside the jail during regular search operations.

Jail Superintendent Ashish Kapoor said security was beefed up while surprise checking was being conducted on regular basis that led to seizure of mobile phones, besides other prohibited material from the jail premises.
