609 candidates submit nominations for MC poll

AMRITSAR: On the last day of filing the nominations for Municipal Corporation elections, total 609 candidates filed nominations for 85 seats of the house.

On the last day of filing the nominations for Municipal Corporation elections, total 609 candidates filed nominations for 85 seats of the house.

Today, as many as 585 candidates filed their nominations at offices of various returning officers. Earlier, 24 candidates of various parties filed their candidature till yesterday.

The administration collected the nomination files till 3 pm and compiled the lists late evening.

Expecting a large number of candidatures of the candidates on last date of nomination, the district administration has deployed eight returning officers.

The District Court Complex witnessed a heavy crowd of the candidates and their supporters.

The political parties including Congress and SAD issued the list of their remaining candidates on last-minute.

In a major development the Congress party did not give party ticket to the Former Deputy Mayor, Avtar Singh Truckanwala, as he filed his nominations as an independent candidate.

Truckanwala was a senior Akali leader and shifted his loyalty to the Congress before the Assembly poll. He was known as a close aide to Navjot Singh Sidhu.

“I have filed the nominations as independent. Navjot Singh Sidhu can tell better that why he did not give me the ticket”, said Truckanwala.

Meanwhile, Aam Adami Party failed to issue its final list of candidates. The party nominated only 54 candidates for 85 wards. Shiromani Akali Dal issued the final list of 12 candidates today morning.

The office bearers of Apna Punjab Party alleged that their candidate Sukhwinder Kaur, who was aspirant to contest the elections due to negligence of electoral officials. Apna Punjab Party led by Sucha Singh Chotepur filed 17 candidates in the elections.
