The Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS) corridor outside the railway station here is facing a problem due to dumping of garbage by nearby shopkeepers. The waste scattered alongside the boundaries of the corridor is a common sight.

Due to negligence of the local authorities, the residents feel that if the problem is ignored, large heaps will come up at place.

Apart from the negligence of the local authorities, throwing of waste on road also speaks volumes of the indifference of the nearby shops to maintain cleanliness near their premises.

“The cleanliness in the area directly hits the businesses in that particular locality. The shopkeepers must understand that unhygienic surroundings will ultimately affect their health and businesses,” said Jagdev Singh, a resident.

The shopkeepers said a few costermongers are responsible for the garbage as they throw garbage during the nights. “First of all, a large number of dustbins should be installed near the railway station. If a dustbin is available then people will use them,” said Rattan Chand, an electronic trader at the nearby the Liberty Market.

The BRTS corridor in city is also under threat from thieves and other anti-social elements as the iron grills installed on its sides have gone missing at various places. The corridor on this stretch was completed just before the state assembly elections. However, in these few months a substantial number of grills have gone missing.

“If no checks are made, more grills will go missing in foggy season when visibility is low and it provides a safe cover to antisocial elements,” said another resident Manmohan Singh.
