The Government Medical College (GMC) is all set to get a cancer institute. The college authorities stated that tendering process for construction of the building would be initiated within this month.

The GMC Principal, Dr BS Bal, said a meeting of the college authorities, officials of the Punjab Health Systems Corporation and Directorate of Medical Education with the chief architect of the state was held recently. He said the architectural design of the proposed building had already been prepared and passed.

Dr Bal added that the Punjab Health Systems Corporation was expected to float tenders for construction of the institute within a few days. He said a total of Rs 33 crore would be spent on construction of the building. The institute would come up at a total cost of around Rs 120 crore, he added.

The college authorities stated that the institute would be a boon for patients of nearby districts as well as those from Jammu-Kashmir and Himachal. Earlier, such patients had to visit the PGI, Chandigarh.

Dr Bal said once the tender was allotted building would be completed within stipulated time so that the facility was initiated at the earliest.
