The Jallianwala Bagh Martyrs’ Memorial Civil Hospital is planning to set up a study circle in association with Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) to conduct a bridge course on community medicine for nurses.
Officials said the necessary formalities for the state government initiative to upgrade the qualification of the existing staff for providing better services had been completed. The classes for the first batch for six-month course will begin from next month. Each batch would have 30 seats and experts from the field of medicine would take classes on a regular basis.
They stated that after completion of the course, the nurses would be considered as professionally competent to handle minor and simple follow-up cases at the OPD and it would help the specialists in concentrating on complicated cases.
The fee and other expenses for the interested candidates would be borne by the government. The government is also planning to open such centres in seven other districts, said an official.
Senior Medical Officer Dr Rajinder Arora, who has been appointed programme officer for the project, said it would help use the existing manpower to its full capacity. He said that six-month course would include both theory and practical classes.
