The University Business School of Guru Nanak Dev University organised a national seminar on sustainable development on the campus today.

It was sponsored by the University Grants Commission and SAP.

Seminar director Dr AS Sidhu welcomed the guests and threw light on the concepts of sustainable development.

Co-director Dr BS Hundal shared his views on the sustainability issues related to the Indian economy.

Head of the department Dr BS Mann, who was also the organising secretary, said suggested measures are required at the micro and macro levels to elevate Indian and other developing economies with higher and sustained growth.

Chief organiser Dr Vikram Sandhu touched the agriculture sector and discussed its role in ensuring sustainability.

Dr NS Tung, Dean, Academic Affairs, was the chief guest at the seminar and spoke about the demographic divide of India. He said there was a need for optimum utilisation of the resources.

Dr Rajinder Kumar, professor, NIT Kurukshetra, delivered the keynote address and laid stress on the measures required for sustainability. A total of 45 papers were presented by delegates from different parts of the country. The papers covered various aspects of sustainable development, such as sustainable agriculture, green financing, sustainable urbanisation, the role of advertisement in promoting sustainable development and its case studies.

The valedictory session was presided over by Dr RS Sandhu, professor, Department of Sociology, talked about the scenario of urbanisation policies implemented in India.

Presidential address given by Dr Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, professor, Punjab School of Economics, highlighted the problems that have cropped up due to the imbalances in wealth sharing in the society.

Dr BS Mann said the department was planning to organise many more activities in the coming days for building the department a true knowledge hub.
