Deputy Commissioner Kamaldeep Singh Sangha today visited the leisure valley, popularly known as Rose Park or the 40-khuh area here. The park which remained neglected and in a dilapidated condition for years, is now being developed under the HRIDAY project.

The central government released Rs 5 crore for its development under the ambitious project.

The park derives its name from the 40 wells (khuhs) located in it. These wells supplied water to the city for 70 years. They were dismantled in 1972 after the advent of new technology. The park is of historical importance not only for the city, but also for the state. It is associated with the advent of the first usage of technology for water supply in the state.

The British engineers had laid down a well-planned uninterrupted water supply system, supplemented by a green cover around it. They used 125-horse power diesel-operated engine to harness water. After the induction of the new technology, the wells and the machinery became redundant in the early 1970s. In 1980, the authorities threw open the rose garden for the public.
