Amritsar, February 16

The teacher unions are upset over the delay in the issuance of roll numbers for Punjab State Education Board (PSEB) examinations. Democratic Teachers’ Front and Government Teachers’ Union have expressed their displeasure over the delay.

Ashwani Awasthi, president, Democratic Teachers’ Front, Amritsar, said,” I have no clue what the authorities want. They are not following the correct way to deal with the situation. There is no atmosphere for proper studies for students as they are more worried about the roll numbers and exam centres than studies.”

He said the board had on one hand introduced a new policy on exam centres and delayed the issuance of roll numbers to students on the other. “I don’t understand the system,” he said.

Notably, under the new policy, the examination centres for private school students will be created in government schools. Besides, government school students will not be allotted their schools as exam centres.

Private schools, too, are up in arms against the board as they recently staged a protest over it. They claim that the new move to curb mass copying is “not student friendly and defames private schools affiilated to the PSEB”.

Mangal Singh, a leader of Government Teachers’ Union, said, “I guess the delay has been due to the change in policies.”

Attempts to establish contact with higher education authorities failed.
