Vishvakarma Day was celebrated with fervour in the city today. Most of the factory workers, tailors, craftsman and mechanics in the city marked the day by worshipping their tools as a symbol of their reverence towards their equipment. They also took a one-day break from work. The day is usually observed a day after Diwali.

People observing the day stressed on the necessity of devoting a day to remember the importance of tools in their daily lives. Most of the factories, mechanics, and others shun work for the day. A traditional pooja is performed. According to the system, tools such as hammers and spanners, among other tools, are cleaned with milk and a prayer is offered to Lord Vishwakarma, followed by distribution of prasad.

“No one works from the community. It is our day to show respect to our lord and our tools. I along with others carried out a traditional religious ceremony. The ceremony is usually over by noon. We all meet, pray and then disburse. It is a day off for us,” said Bittu Brar, a member of the Mechanic Association, Amritsar. The Hindu god Lord Vishwakarma is considered as to be a builder of the universe, as a result He is worshipped by factory workers, factory owners, labourers, tailors, mechanics and others every year. “For us, it is a great event. I took a day off from my owners. Every year, this gives me a sense of pride. It is recognition of our work,” said Vicky, a tailor at a local shop.

Meanwhile, a grand function was organised by Rashtriya Bihar Vikas Manch and Banke Bihari Lane, Batala Road, to mark the occasion. MLA (central) OP Soni presided over the function as the chief guest.
