Amritsar, December 7

A matrimonial dispute took an ugly turn when the girl’s family allegedly fired at the boy’s family while they were going for a hearing in the Baba Bakala court.

The incident occurred on November 28 while the victims lodged a complaint only last evening. Following the complaint, the police have not only booked the girl’s family, but she was also nominated in the First Information Report (FIR).

Besides the girl, Sukhpreet Kaur, among others booked include her father, Sharanjit Singh, and his relative Gurbaksh Singh, all residents of Kohatwind Musalman village, and Satnam Singh, a resident of Nanded, besides two unknown persons. A case under Sections 307, 506, 148 and149, IPC, and Sections 25, 27, 54, and 59 of the Arms Act was registered against them.

Sukhjinder Singh, a resident of Basant Nagar on Sultanwind Road, the complainant, stated to the Beas police that a matrimonial dispute was going on between his Canada-based son, Kanwar Harmanpreet Singh, and his wife Sukhpreet Kaur in the Baba Bakala court. He said on November 28, he along with Sukhwinder Singh of New Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar had come for a hearing in the court.

He said as his lawyer said the hearing would take place after lunch, they went for some work in Baba Bakala. He said when they were returning after lunch and reached near the ITI Baba Bakala, a white-colour SUV (PB-23-K-0059) stopped near them. He alleged that Satnam Singh along with others started firing at them. He and Sukhwinder ran away from the spot in order to escape. As they were frightened after the incident, he did not approach the police at that time.

ASI Sawinder Singh, the investigating officer, said preliminary investigations had confirmed the firing incident. He said raids were on to arrest the suspects and further investigations were underway.
