First learning, stitching, drafting school for hearing impaired opens

AMRITSAR: A skill development institute for stitching and drafting was inaugurated by Dr Inderjit Kaur and Padma Shri Vikramjit Singh Sahney at the Pingalwara complex at Manawala.

A skill development institute for stitching and drafting was inaugurated by Dr Inderjit Kaur and Padma Shri Vikramjit Singh Sahney at the Pingalwara complex at Manawala. This will be the first exclusive institute in Punjab providing training in stitching and drafting to the hearing impaired in sign language along with normal persons.

This has been made possible through the combined efforts of Dr Inderjit Kaur, president, All-India Pingalwara Charitable Society and Padma Shri Vikramjit Singh Sahney, Chairman, Sun Foundation.

Dr Inderjit Kaur has always been in the forefront for promoting the cause of people with disabilities and already has three schools for deaf children functioning in three districts of Punjab. Surya Kiran is a leading project of Sun Foundation for imparting vocational and skill development training to the poor girls and the women and has a large number of centres in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi. Sahney said his mother was extremely attached to the cause of Pingalwara and her wish has resulted in the first project for the hearing impaired in Punjab.

Training for the deaf persons is being provided through a qualified teacher proficient in sign language. The school has 16 students in its first batch and includes nine deaf students. Teaching with modern aids and well planned curriculum will help the students to find good job opportunities. The entire training is free of cost.

On this occasion coordinator Sun Foundation, Baljeet kaur Johal, Jai Singh, Administrator, Manawala Pingalwara, R P Singh Director of Pingalwara school and other were present.
