The city police arrested five thieves, who had decamped with 200 bags of sugar from a godown located in Bhai Vir Singh Colony on March 18. The godown belongs to Parwinder Singh, a resident of the Ranjit Avenue area here.
Those arrested were identified as Arwinder Singh and Anil Kumar of Fateh Singh Colony, Gurmet Singh of Bhai Vir Singh Colony, Jasbir Singh of Himmatpura and Jaspreet Singh of Bhagtanwala. A case under Sections 457 and 380, IPC, was registered at the Gate Hakima police station in this connection. The police recovered 100 bags of sugar and impounded the vehicle (registration No. PB-02-AQ-9946) used in the crime.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (investigation) Jagmohan Singh said the accused had formed a gang to commit thefts and robberies. He said during investigation it came to light that Gurmeet used to live in the area and knew that Parwinder came to his godown occasionally. Therefore, they planned to steal sugar bags from the godown. The accused were also trying to sell sugar in various parts of the city, which led to their arrest, he added.
He said the accused were brought on a police remand and more recoveries were likely to be made from them.
