Five held for drug peddling, robberies

AMRITSAR: Following a tip-off, the city police have arrested a Jharkhand resident on charges of drug peddling.

Following a tip-off, the city police have arrested a Jharkhand resident on charges of drug peddling.

The Jharkhand resident, identified as Dalip Kumar, was arrested with 1.5 kg opium. According to the police, he used to bring opium from Jharkhand and later sell it in villages and various parts of Punjab.

Jagmohan Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (investigations), said the police received a specific input that he was going to Nawan pind village by a bus to deliver the opium consignment. A naka was laid near Guru Nanak Bhawan. From Ram Talai Chowk, he was going to the bus stand from inside the City Centre.

He said a case under the NDPS Act had been registered against him and further investigations were under progress.

Meanwhile, the CIA staff arrested three robbers identified as Kulwinder Singh, Amritpal Singh of Anngarh and Sunil Kumar of Bharariwal and Satnam Singh of Basarke Bhaini village. The police recovered nine mobile phones, a sharp-edged weapon and a motorcycle which they used in committing crimes from their possession. The police seized 4 gm heroin from Satnam’s possession.

He said the gang was involved in robbing the people travelling on foot. They confessed to have committed a number of instances of looting people by threatening them with sharp-edged weapons. They were active for the past one year and committed over two dozen robberies in different police stations. The DCP said the accused used to target women, pedestrians, tourists and elderly couple. They used to commit crimes in the wee hours from 3 am to 5 am.

He said they also used to loot persons going to the railway station or the Vallah vegetable market in the morning.
