Gang of snatchers busted, three held

The city police claimed to have busted a gang of snatchers with the arrest of two snatchers and a drug peddler here today. The accused has been identified as Jaskaran Singh, alias Karan (21), a resident of Baba Deep Singh Colony, Sun Sahib Road; Jagdeep Singh, alias Jaggi (21), of Hargobind Avenue; and Amritpal Singh, alias Jatt (24), a resident of Harkrishan Nagar.

Gagan Ajit Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Investigation), said they had been running a campaign against anti-social elements. Under the drive, Inspector Rajesh Sharma, in-charge, Crime Investigation Agency, along with the police team, was on a patrolling duty. After getting a tip-off, they raided a spot near the Dera Radha Swami Satsang Bhawan on GT Road and arrested Jaskaran and Jagdeep yesterday.

The accused were involved in several snatching incidents.

The police recovered 10 mobile phones, which they have snatched from residents, and a motorcycle that was used in the crime.

Police officials said the accused during the investigation confessed that they had snatched mobile phones and valuables from people from the Khalsa College, Guru Nanak Dev University and Cantonment Road areas.

The DCP (I) said during investigation, Jaskaran and Jagdeep also confessed that they used to sell mobile phones to Amritpal. The police raided latter’s residence and recovered two snatched mobile phones and 10 gm of heroin from his possession. The police found that the duo used to sell the phones to Amritpal to buy heroin from him.

A case has been registered under Sections 21/61/85 of the NDPS Act at the Chheharta police station.

The DCP (I) said the police had been investigating the matter and the accused would provide more details during the investigation. The police also probe the source from where he used to get the heroin.
