The state government has directed Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) to conduct counselling of Khalsa University students.

The government has also asked the GNDU to shift the students either to its campus or affiliated colleges. However, uncertainty prevails for those students whose courses are not being taught in the GNDU.

To give admission to these students, the GNDU will hold a three-day counselling programme at the office of Dean Academic Affairs from June 27.

Among the PhD programmes, as many as 28 students were in commerce and management; 19 in Punjabi; 16 in education; seven in computer science and electronics; six each in law and physical education; four each in journalism and mass communication, pharmacy; three each in electronics and computer engineering, food science, Hindi; two each in English and science subjects; one each in library science, mechanical engineering, micro lab technology, nursing and psychology.

Notably, the GNDU does not have courses such as mechanical engineering, micro-lab technology, nursing and pharmacy. It can offer journalism and mass communication course at its Jalandhar campus.

AS Singh, former student of Khalsa University, said, “In case, the GNDU offers admission in colleges and campus, which are out of the city, then it will increase the expenditure of boarding and lodging. Some students coming from mediocre families may not be in a position to bear the hike in the expenditure.”

Dr KS Kahlon, Registrar, GNDU, said, “The university will write to Khalsa University to provide the list of its students. Thereafter, those students will be contacted who did not read advertisements related to appearing in the counselling.”

He said the government would take the final call on the students whose courses were not in the GNDU.
