Days after the Punjab and Haryana High Court sought an answer from the Punjab Government as well as the PGIMER, Chandigarh, regarding the treatment of 11-month old Chahat, the Health Department, Chandigarh, has asked the local health authorities to look into the possible treatment and the schemes under which treatment can be offered to the obese child.

Amritsar-based Chahat has been hitting headlines for her morbid obesity. Her parents, Suraj Kumar, the father, who works at a cable operator’s shop, and Renu Kumar, the mother, a housewife, have been running from post to pillar for her treatment. They want to know the exact cause of her medical condition, which is yet to ascertained.

The family had even gone to the PGIMER early this year for her advance treatment, but were forced to return owing to financial crunch, following which suo-motu notice was issued to the Punjab Government as well as the PGIMER.

Explaining the situation, Dr Pradeep Chawla, Civil Surgeon, Amritsar, said, “I have been asked by the higher authorities to look into the probable treatment and the schemes under which Chahat can be treated here. I have asked for her reports from the hospitals concerned to follow up the case.”
