With the Municipal Corporation (MC) elections less than a week away, every nook and corner of the city has been occupied by hoardings and posters. The situation is such that candidates, failing to find room anymore, are getting illegal hoardings hung or tied even to traffic signals and sign boards to publicise themselves to garner votes.

Over 400 candidates are in the fray in 85 wards of the Municipal Corporation. The hoardings and posters installed in the city are thousands in number.

Balwant Singh, a city resident, said, “Hoardings in large numbers have come up everywhere. MC officials appear to be in a state of hybernation amid electioneering.”

Illegal hoardings are not only inconveniencing drivers, but also defacing a number of sign boards, much to the chagrin of those from outside the district. Residents said the civic body should get the menace checked.

Another resident, Harjit Singh, said, “The councillors elected in MC elections will be entrusted with the job to look after the city and make it better. If they don’t give a damn to the norms before their election, what they will do after assuming power. The councillors of the Municipal Corporation must set an example for the residents and abide by the laws.”

When contacted, Sher Singh, Superintendent, Advertisements, MC, said, “Necessary action is taken in routine as we remove illegal advertisements during our drive every week. The illegal advertisements will be removed soon and suitable action against the errants will be taken.
