Amritsar, April 15

The police arrested two youths and confiscated a huge quantity of intoxicants on Sunday. Their interrogation revealed that they had brought the consignment from a tea vendor in Roorkee, Uttar Pradesh.

This has left the cops baffled as they think that the drug peddlers procure intoxicants either from the local market or Himachal Pradesh. This also indicates how wide the network of drug peddlers is.

The accused have been identified as Nishan Sharma and Bobby Sharma, both residents of Mustafabad. Earlier, they used to work as labourers but got into the illegal drug trade as they thought that they could mint a large sum of money easily.

The police recovered 10,000 intoxicating capsules and 1,350 tablets from their possession.

Harbans Singh, investigating officer, said a case under Sections 22, 61 and 85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, was registered against them. They were brought on two-day police remand for further interrogation.

“They used to sell the drugs to addicts in Mustafabad at higher prices. The accused were new in the illegal trade as there has been no previous record against them. Nishan works with a shopkeeper while Bobby works with a paint factory,” he added.

ADCP Lakhbir Singh said nailing illegal sale of habit forming drugs has become a major challenge for the police.

Though the sale of contraband, like heroin, has been curtailed to a major extent, synthetic drugs continue to be sold unabated. The police are working hard to nail the errants,” he added.
