Amritsar, March 24

After asking the PWD authorities for installing a barbed fence outside the boundary wall of the newly constructed Amritsar Central Jail, the authorities have now asked them to construct an extra watch tower between watch tower four and five.

The reason being that the distance between the two watch towers (four and five) is large due to which the security staff deputed at these watchtowers cannot see the movement of suspicious elements trying to throw prohibited material inside the jail premises.

Ashish Kapoor, Jail Superintendent, has confirmed that he has written to executive engineers of the Public Works Department in this regard.

According to details procured by this correspondent, the central jail has witnessed over 40 attempts in which several outsiders tried to throw prohibited material including mobile phones or cigarettes or bidies inside the jail premises and cases were also registered against unscrupulous elements in this connection.

The Central Jail has around 13 watch towers on its sprawling campus. However, due to a large distance between watch tower four and five, the jail staff find it difficult to detect any suspicious movement.

Jail officials had earlier written to the PWD authorities to install a barbed fence in order to restrict the movement of the miscreants near the jail’s outer boundary wall. The new Kendri Sudhar Ghar was constructed in the Fatahpur area having a dense population around it. The jail authorities had expressed their deep concern over this.

The jail authorities had urged the department to construct the same besides installing the barbed fence soon as it is a major security lapse.
