Khalsa College introduces course in theatre studies

AMRITSAR: In order to produce Punjabi theatre legends such as Dr Harcharan Singh, Dr Gurdyal Singh Phull Bhisham Sahni, Atamjit, Jatinder Brar and Kewal Dhaliwal, Khalsa College has introduced a graduate degree course in theatre studies.

In order to produce Punjabi theatre legends such as Dr Harcharan Singh, Dr Gurdyal Singh Phull Bhisham Sahni, Atamjit, Jatinder Brar and Kewal Dhaliwal, Khalsa College has introduced a graduate degree course in theatre studies. The first educational institution to do so in Punjab, Khalsa College aspires to promote Punjabi theatre and give an edge to local talent.

“Theatre was being offered as an extra curricular activity until now, but as a degree course, it will have an extensively designed curriculum including light and sound design, stage design, and costume and theatre production basics,” said Dr Davinder Singh, registrar, dean, cultural activities, Khalsa College.

Dr Sing said by becoming the first institution to offer the course at graduate level, we hope to enrol quality talent in first batch.

The college has a theatre group called “Rangmanch” that has 25 members. “Amritsar is the hotbed of Punjabi theatre and literature. The city has produced a number of theatre artistes, who have proved their mettle,” said Dr Singh.

With emphasis on original scripts, experimental theatre and theatre productions, the college hope to continue of producing quality plays. The group is set with its upcoming production “Raktbeej”, written by Dr Singh and directed by Emmanual Singh.
