Amritsar, May 16

Six days after a married woman died under mysterious circumstances, the Jhander police have booked her husband and father-in-law allegedly on charges of dowry death.

The deceased was identified as Harjinder Kaur (25) of Bal Bawa village while those booked include her husband, Harpreet Singh, and his father, Harjinder Singh.  A case under Sections 304-B and 34, IPC, has been registered against them. The police have arrested her husband, Harpreet Singh, following the registration of an FIR.

Harjinder Kaur had died on the intervening night of May 8-9. Though, initially, the police have initiated action under the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) on the consent of the two families, however now the police have registered a case of dowry death, following the statement of the deceased’s mother, Joginder Kaur. She said the accused used to tease her to bring more dowry since marriage around five years ago. She said a few days after the marriage, Harpreet and his father started harassing her daughter on the pretext of bringing insufficient dowry in the marriage.

Harpal Singh, SHO, Jhander police station, and  investigating officer in the case, said a medical board was constituted for autopsy which confirmed that the deceased was strangulated. Therefore, a dowry-death case had now been registered. Harpreet Singh had been arrested.
