In a shocking incident, unidentified miscreants struck at the Martyrs’ Well of Jallianwala Bagh and stole money, offered by visitors to pay obeisance to martyrs. The accused climbed down into the well with the help of a rope by breaking the mesh of the ventilator of the building on the well.

The Jallianwala Bagh authorities have hired watchmen of a private firm for surveillance. The watchman on night duty did not notice any movement of persons last night.

Gaya Parshad, the watchman on night duty, stated in his complaint to the police that after completing his duty, he was going towards his quarter in the morning. He spotted that a rope was hanging at the Martyrs’ Well. He immediately went atop the well and found that the mesh from the ventilator window was broken. The accused had stolen money from the Martyrs’ Well which was offered by the visitors.

ASI Sarabjit Singh, investigating officer from the C Division police station, said, “The visitors often throw coins in the well to pay respect to the martyrs. The authorities are not aware about the amount. The well is around 15 feet deep and lying dry for years. The accused climbed down to commit a theft. We have registered a case against the unidentified accused under relevant sections. The investigation is going on”.

According to information, the Jallianwala Bagh Trust did not instal any CCTV camera near the well.
