Newly-wed ends life in Jawahar Nagar

AMRITSAR: The holy city was rocked by two suicides today. While a newly-wed woman committed suicide in the Jawahar Nagar area, a 16-year-old girl ended her life in the Kot Khalsa area here today.

The holy city was rocked by two suicides today. While a newly-wed woman committed suicide in the Jawahar Nagar area, a 16-year-old girl ended her life in the Kot Khalsa area here today.

The deceased were identified as Navpreet Kaur and Parveen Kaur, respectively.

Navpreet Kaur was marred to Vikramjit Singh around three months ago. The Maqboolpura police have booked Vikramjit Singh, his father Mangal Singh and mother Kanwaljit Kaur on charges of abetment to suicide.

Members of her family alleged that Navpreet was strangled to death by her in-laws. No arrest has been made so far, as the accused were missing. According to the police, Vikramjit Singh had returned from abroad several months back. In February, he was married to Navpreet Kaur.

Her family members alleged that within a few days of marriage, her in-laws started teasing her for bringing insufficient dowry. She was being subjected to mental and physical torture. She had told about this to her family members. They said every time the matter was resolved after the intervention of the family members.

Yesterday also, a dispute had occurred in the family and the victim had informed about this to her family over the phone in the morning.

They stated to the police around noon that her in-laws informed them that she was not well and admitted to the hospital. They said when they reached the spot, she had already died. A case has been registered.
