NGOs hold events for bringing cheer to the needy

To bring cheer to the needy in the festival season, various NGOs organised events in the city today.

The objective of organising events was to make this Diwali memorable for many children.

Continuing with their joy of giving campaign, volunteers of Voice of Amritsar (VOA), an NGO, visited Government Elementary School, Khusrupur, situated near the Indo-Pak border. They gave gift hampers to schoolchildren as a part of their annual activities ahead the festival of lights, apart from classroom stationery.

Founder president of the VOA Dr Rakesh Sharma said, “A number of volunteers took part in the activity. It is the smile on the faces of such kids that keep us moving ahead.”

In another initiative, a special exhibition of handmade phulkari, hand painted diyas, marbled cards, phulkaari trays and customised gift wrappings were put up by the Initiative for Viable Education (IVE), an NGO, in the Ranjit Avenue area. These items were made by children living in slum areas.

Talking about it, Pearl Jassra, founder of the IVE, said, “The idea is to motivate these young children to lead a good life by learning such skills. All money will be used for the betterment of the school run under the IVE for free.”
