Amritsar, October 16

Concerned over the increasing incidents of snatchings and robberies, the city police have yet again started ‘Beat foot patrolling’ system in order to create fear in the unscrupulous elements creating an atmosphere of insecurity among the people especially women, tourist and traders.

A special emphasis would be taken on the senior citizens and women community.

The IG Border range and Officiating Police Commissioner Surinderpal Singh Parmar inaugurated the system during a special programme organised near the Golden Temple area.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Amrik Singh Powar, the DCP (investigation) Jagmohan Singh and senior city police officials were present on the occasion.

The Police Commissioner said city has been divided into two zones and each zone would have five beats in the initial stages. Around 30 constables including 10 women cops have been included in these beats.

He said a beat officer would be present in their designated beat box during morning (10am to 11.30am) and evening (4.30pm to 5.30pm) and citizens could approach them for their minor quarrels.

Powar further said the step has been taken in a view of the increasing crime rate and increase police-public cooperation in creating an atmosphere where people feel themselves safe.

He said the police cooperation could help in nailing notorious persons. He said beat officers would have kept a tab on every history-sheeter, anti-social elements and drug peddlers.

Powar further said that he would have the contact numbers of the prominent citizens, banks, dhabas and hotels. These cops would visit these areas and meet the people on daily basis. This would help in creating a rapport with the residents and thereby sharing information about miscreants and drug peddlers in their respective areas, he added.
