Amritsar, January 12

Officials of the Amritsar Improvement Trust (AIT) today pressed in their men and material to remove the encroachments outside two hotels in the Ranjit Avenue area. The AIT carried out the anti-encroachment drive after RTI activist Parbodh Chander Bali filed a writ petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

AIT Chairman Suresh Mahajan said the next date of hearing in the case is on January 17. About 15 persons along with a ditch machine removed these encroachments. Interestingly, Cabinet Minister Anil Joshi appeared in person to question the visiting team of the Improvement Trust.

Talking to the Amritsar Tribune, Joshi said both hotels were authorised by the AIT through a resolution to maintain the public space around them. Meanwhile, Mahajan said politicians should not shelter encroachers, as it would encourage others to follow suit.
