The special students of the local Smarpan Special School were honoured at a specially organised function here. Deputy Commissioner Pardeep Kumar Sabharwal was the chief guest on the occasion while other officials, too, were present at the function. The students,  who had been honoured, had given a special presentation at the recently concluded 20th state-level Special Olympics, organised at Gursewak Singh Government College for Physical Education, Patiala. The Deputy Commissioner while speaking on the occasion  assured the school of all possible help from the administration to function smoothly.

Amanpreet Kaur, the owner of the school, said students of the school had won eight medals in the Special Olympics, which include two golds, two bronze and four silvers. The medallists were Fateh Singh, Smailpreet Singh,  Sukhmeetpal Singh, Amritpal Singh and Ram Mehta.

This was the maiden school in this border district, which was being run by Amanpreet Kaur and her husband, Sukhjitpal Singh Randev. The couple has their own special kid. The school was started four years ago with a mere three children, but now there were about 30 students who remain busy in one or the other activity in the school, the whole  day. A number of social workers and social organisations were extending all help to run this special school to serve society.

Kar Sewa sect with various aims

The Kar Sewa sect, Sarhali Sahib, under the guidance of Baba Sukha Singh, is not only busy in religious activities, but is equally involved in promoting educational and the other social causes. Baba Sukha Singh said the sect had been organising blood-donation camps every year and this year, the sect had a target to collect 1,000 units of blood. Mass marriages of couples from a poor background were also being solemnised every year. The sect has been running a number of educational institutions — among them being Guru Gobind Singh Khalsa College, Sarhali, besides others at different places in and out of Punjab.

Changing trends in growing paddy

A changing trend in growing paddy in the district has been observed this year in which farmers have mostly sown A-grade paddy against the 1121 and 1509 varieties, known as the basmati rice. The area under the 1121 variety was 77,000 hectares last year, which has been reduced to 44,000 hectares this year and the area under the1509 variety, which was a mere 1,000 hectares last year, has been reduced to a mere 800 hectares this year. Dr Nirmal Singh, District Food and Supply Controller (DFC), said the area under the A-Grade paddy had gone up from 1.2 lakh hectares last year to 1.4 lakh hectares this year and the yield, too, had gone up. The A-grade paddy was being procured by the government-procurement agencies with an MSP of Rs 1,590 per quintal when the other varieties, the first choice in the international market, were being procured by private agencies. During the past two years, the 1121 and the 1509 varieties were procured with very low prices, which caused huge losses to the farmers. The DFC said the prices of the 1509 paddy variety had gone up to Rs 2,800 to Rs 3,000 per quintal in the local market and similar was the position with the 1121 variety. The 1121 and the 1509 variety basmati was not available in the market due to reduction in cultivable area. Balwant Singh, a farmer of Kambo village, who holds 12-acre land grew the 1509 variety in only two acres of land. His produce of 1509 was procured with Rs 2,800 per quintal.
