Amritsar, August 13

With Independence Day celebrations just two days away, the city as well as rural police have beefed up the security.

Paramilitary forces have been deployed across the city, especially at vulnerable points to thwart any untoward incident.

Police Commissioner SS Srivastava today held a meeting with all senior police officials and passed necessary instructions regarding the security arrangements. He asked them to check suspicious elements and vehicles entering the city. Cops were seen checking cars and vehicles at various chowks. He directed the officials to remain on their toes to meet any eventuality.

“As Janmashtami also falls on the same day, security has also been enhanced around religious places,” he said.

Parampal Singh, SSP, Amritsar rural, said heightened security arrangements were in place to ensure safe and secure Independence Day celebrations. Extra forces have been deployed and the patrolling has been intensified. Bullet proof vehicles too have been pressed into service. Close vigil has been kept on all roads leading towards the Attari border. Nakas have been established at important points while Special Weapons and Tactics Teams (SWAT) have been stationed to strengthen the second line of defence.

The movement of suspicious elements is being tracked and raids are being conducted at their hideouts, he added.
