Seven snatching incidents reported in the holy city

Various steps taken by the city police to curb snatching notwithstanding, the robbers are striking at will, if the recent instances are anything to go by.

The holy city witnessed as many as seven snatching instances yesterday. Among the victims include a Delhi resident who had come to pay obeisance at Darbar Sahib, an employee of a finance firm who was returning after collecting instalments from customers and another Delhi resident who had come to attend a marriage function at a reputed hotel here.

BR Sriharan, a resident of Rohini, Delhi, stated to the Division B police that he along with his relatives had come to attend a marriage party at Regenta Hotel. He said at 1.15 am when he was keeping his bag in his car, an unknown person came on a motorcycle from behind and snatched his bag containing an Apple I pad, an expensive mobile phone and Rs 44,000 in cash and fled.

Satnam Singh, investigating officer, said the police have got the CCTV footage of the incident from a nearby bank and they were on the verge of cracking the case.

Arjun Singh, another resident of Delhi, lodged a complaint at the Division C police station that an unidentified motorcycle-borne person snatched the purse of his wife, Harpreet Kaur, when they were going on foot to the shrine. Her purse contained Rs 3,000 in cash, artificial jewellery worth Rs 10,000, silver ornaments and a wrist watch besides plastic money.

In another incident, Jasleen Singh, a finance firm employee, was robbed by two unknown persons when he was returning after collecting instalments from customers. The robbers took away Rs 2 lakh, a laptop and a finger print machine from him. The incident occurred near Gunam Nagar abadi.

Similarly, Lucky Pal, a hotel employee, Shiv Parsad, a migrant and a tobacco dealer, Kulwinder Kaur and Nisha, both local residents, were looted by snatchers in separate instances.

Daljinder Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police, said the Police Department have initiated a number of steps to ensure a crime-free environment in the city. He said a number of snatchers were arrested in the recent past. He said soon a visible difference would be there and all the snatchers would be put behind the bars.
