Showers bring double delight

AMRITSAR:The showers late on Saturday evening brought a double delight for the residents as it, besides reducing the temperature, washed away the dust blanket that had covered the region for the last two days.

Amritsar, June 17

The showers late on Saturday evening brought a double delight for the residents as it, besides reducing the temperature, washed away the dust blanket that had covered the region for the last two days.

The mild intermittent showers continued throughout the night and residents woke up to a clear sky and a comparatively cold day. The scorching heat for the last few days had become unbearable for residents.

“The last few days had been too hot. The environment was under the grip of dust,” said a homemaker, Sukriti Mahajan.

Meanwhile, the agrarian community, too, welcomed the showers as paddy transplantation would start after three days and the moisture in the soil would make puddling of their fields easy.

“Had it not been a government order to transplant paddy after June 20, the last nights showers will have increased the pace of transplantation. Even now, it will help farmers as showers in many areas were quite good where the soil is expected to retain the moisture by the transplantation date,” said Rawel Singh, a farmer from Thatha village.

Medical experts said the showers were much needed as it had not rained for a long and dust particles were floating in the air. “The sky is now clear and problems, such as chest congestion, heaviness and breathing troubles, will reduce,” said Civil Surgeon, Dr Hardeep Singh Ghai.— TNS
