A student, identified as Arshdeep Singh of Laxshmi Vihar locality, was critically wounded after a group of persons shot at him near the Verka bypass here today. He was admitted to a private hospital where his condition is stated to be serious.
A dispute over the president-ship of the students union on the Guru Nanak Dev University college campus at Verka is stated to be the reason behind the incident.
Among those booked on attempt to murder charges include a former councillor’s son, identified as Sukhraj Singh alias Sukh Bhullar. Among others who were booked include Jaskirat Singh alias Chhota Lala of Bal Kalan village and Gagan Saini besides several unknown persons. They escaped from the scene after the incident.
Gurshehbaz Singh, who is the current president of the students union, was accompanying him at the time of the incident.
Nishan Singh, the investigating officer, said during elections, the college campus students elected Gurshehbaz Singh as the president. However, this had not gone down well with Sukh Bhullar who wanted to be the president of the students union, although he and his accomplices are outsiders and not the students of the college.
He said today when Gurshehbaz along with Arshdeep was going towards the Majitha road bypass in their car, the accused along with his accomplices intercepted them and started beating him up. They fired at him and Arshdeep came to rescue him. The bullet hit is private parts and he was critically injured.
Nishan Singh said that raids were on to arrest the suspects, who were missing since the incident.
